The Sweetest Thing

This week there had been quite a lot of making and baking sweet treats! Some for gifts and some just for us.

I made these biscuits on Tuesday, I make them quite often as they are so simple and so delicious. The recipe is from one of my favourite cookbooks Recipes from my Mother for my Daughter by Lisa Faulkner. There are so many lovely recipes in this book as well as beautiful styling and photography. These biscuits are called Sunshine Shorties and the recipe can be found here.

It is my older brother's birthday today and like many males, he is notoriously difficult to choose gifts for! I made him these last night to give to him along with his gift voucher. They are called space bars and are again simple to make but also very moreish. The recipe is my mum's, but she has given me permission to share...

Space Bars

75grams butter, 1 tablespoon golden syrup, 2 chopped Mars Bars, 100grams Rice Krispies, 200grams melted chocolate

Gently melt the butter, syrup and Mars Bars together in a saucepan. Remove from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies. Press this mixture into a foil tray dusted with icing sugar. Pour the melted chocolate over the top. Put in the fridge and leave to set for 3-4 hours. Cut into squares and enjoy!

Mum used to make these for birthday teas and things when we were kids, so hopefully D will enjoy them. I don't know if they will be as good as mum's though...!

My friend recently had a couple of trees cut down from her garden and was kind enough to let us have the wood for our wood burning stove. So, I made her some fudge as a little thank you. I am popping round to see her this morning so will give it to her then. Here is the recipe...

White Chocoate Marshmallow Fudge

185g white mini marshmallows, 75g butter, 1 tablespoon water, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract, 200g melted white chocolate

Gently melt the marshmallows, butter, water and vanilla together in a large saucepan, stirring frequently until all the marshmallows have melted. Remove from the heat and stir in the melted white chocolate. Pour the mixture into a foil tray (I find rubbing a tiny bit of olive oil with a piece of kitchen paper onto the tray prevents the fudge from sticking). Put in the fridge to set for 2-3 hours before cutting into squares.

It's going to be a busy weekend with swimming lessons, a birthday party and a play date on Sunday. All for Miss M of course...! I am planning to work on my crochet blanket and will hopefully get it finished and be able to share it on here next week. I will be sad to finish it though, I have loved making it so much. Oh well, I will just have to start planning the next blanket! Thanks for the lovely comments on my previous posts and I hope everyone has a great weekend. Back soon...

  1. Wow! Those cookies look delicious and I just LOVE the teacup and saucer. I haven't had "space bars" in years. My Mom used make them when we were little... I must try your recipe for my own kids :) Have a great weekend, Hazel x

  2. HUNGRY NOW! They all look delicious but especially the Sunshine Shorties - will definitely give them a go. The cup and saucer remind me of my Grandma - they were kept alongside all the other crockery but were only ever used by my Grandma herself when she came to visit. Mum told me she only ever drank out of china cups just like the Queen (she was her in-law so I wonder if there was a little cynicism there!) Thanks for the memory! x Jane

  10. The space bars look great, I would mix some of that 'space dust' in with the chocolate so that they crackle too (I love watching Mr and Miss Teenagers faces when they don't expect that!). Happy hooking, I plan on doing some of this myself this afternoon if I get a minutes peace! Take care. Chel x

I get twitchy when i come to the end of a big project and need to have something else up my sleeve.
